Let's give homosexuals the benefit of the doubt and say for the moment that homosexuality truly IS genetic, and not deriving from confusion of gender roles or alternative upbringing as is commonly believed by most straights. As a sexual species, mutation is the key to our evolution, but sometimes people are born with mutations that would-be sexual mates try to veer away from to pass on to their offspring (naturally missing appendages, weak skeletal structure, etc.). No one can really say what homosexuality is doing to human SOCIETY (and I'm not trying to make any claim), but let's be honest with ourselves, it must be recognized that homosexuality is hurting the human SPECIES. An unwanted genetic trait that prohibits an individual to pass on his genes to the next generation could be ANYTHING and is rare and varied, but why is a gene as destructive as sexual attraction to the same sex as rampant as it is?

cat's whiskers is absolutely right. I'm an IDIOT for being seriously curious about why so many gays exist, and I MUST be some homophobic a**hole.... Did you even READ my question? I don't hate gays, I'm jsut curious as to why I see them everywhere. Is that wrong?

I can only guess at this one, but I'd go with this theory. Homosexuality has up until recently been called evil by nearly every civilization ever. Even when it was accepted (like by the Greek army), it was only accepted when there were no women around. So for thousands of years homosexuals probably out of fear of being caught (or out of fear that they were morally unacceptable to God) would get with women and have sex with them to prove their heterosexuality to others. Also during these years having lots of kids was considered a good thing, because wars at this time often meant the complete destruction of a civilization and more kids meant more soldiers (and therefore a greater chance of survival over enemy civilizations). So homosexuals are reproducing at this time and at a rate of eight or nine kids at a time; and those kids themselves reproduce at a rate of eight or nine kids at a time, so it grew exponentially.

Now we have become accepting of homosexuals morally (or at least tolerate them as a society), so an already large number (created by those early civilations) are now coming out in record numbers. There is also the fact that we as a society still fear them (especially our current leaders) and so they are claiming homosexuals are everywhere subverting society for their own purposes, when in reality homosexuals aren't as rampant as they seem (though more rampant then evolution should have them as being).

Actually, if it is genetic, there must be some factor keeping it around. If schizophrenia is the dark side of the coin where genius is concerned. Schizophrenia should disappear as well, since schizophrenics have fewer children than normal...more slowly perhaps, but eventually, and yet they appear with a regularity in our population. It is thought that the reason it is still around is that proto-schizophrenics...people with the genetic predisposition towards schizophrenia... have a tendency to see connections that no one else can (the definition of genius).

As to how this applies to homosexuality, I don't think anyone has hazarded an official guess. It might have something to do with creativity. We might find 50 years from now that wearing mixed plaids causes cancer, and gay men will be the first to snap at you for that...all I'm saying is that just because it hasn't been figured out yet, doesn't mean that it won't or can't be figured out.

It has been proven scientifically that homosexuality is a genetic "thing". It is natural. There is homosexuality in all animal species. Anyone who says homosexuality is not natural has not studied their science enough. Is it that homosexuality is rampant, or are you just noticing it because it has, pardon the pun, come out of the closet and is more mainstream than ever before? Homosexuals have been around for centuries, and it has not stopped the human species from overpopulating the planet yet.

Survival is the strongest instinct. Being gay doesn't mean you can't reproduce. It merely means that there is a stronger sexual attraction to same gender. If indeed we believe for one millisecond that homosexuality is in any way destructive, we have to resolve two issues. There is evidence of same sex attraction as far back as mankind's existence. It's present in all the pre-biblical lore, and exists in the tales from all North American indigenous humans. If there were to be any species wide damage, we should probably have already experienced it. (Unless it manifested itself in ignorant bigotry, then maybe you have it). Secondly, if you want to argue against the procreation by homosexuals, then maybe those of you who have been openly against them should push the other direction. By creating a hostile environment for people with same sex attraction, you've driven them into conventional relationships in order to avoid persecution. This also applied pressure to procreate to "prove" their heterosexuality. The argument could be made that if you allow homosexuals to act like homosexuals you would decrease, not increase the total number in the population. So I guess it's your fault, huh?

I haven't read everything.

There has been research done, certain people like the ones that have claimed they have been Homosexual or Transgender since they were children.. when their donated bodies are examined their BRAINS are different.. chemicals where things went and where things concentrated are/were different then found in normal or the majority. *is haveing trouble typeing* Sorry if this is hard to read.

Homosexuality and Bisexuality have become popular trends, so what I see alot for online are "EMO KIDS" that are people saying they are in their Tweens and Gay.. but they show signs they are just adult predators. It is very popular offline but probably more for College age and not for Tweens.

Some how it's fashionable and adds to status,.. it also can help get closer to real goals and be needed to get a fantasy forefilled.

It's not rampant. It's the same as it ever was, it's just that people are more free today to live, dress, or act the way they want.

Only 3% of the population is estimated to be homosexual.

But the fact that you notice and care says more about you than any trend or genetic effect.

Bigotry and hatred, like you display, hurts the human species a lot more than two people of the same gender who love each other.

Please don't give us the tired old "people are meant for procreation or they are useless" argument. Make sure that you include all barren straight couples and ones who choose not to have children. See? Your "logic" falls apart.

Please keep your hatred to yourself. Or, perhaps try tolerance, understanding, and peace for a change.

There's a difference between "being curious" and attacking LGBT people as having an undesirable "mutation."

what a shame- I think this is a really valid and interesting scientific question. If our only reason for being is to reproduce (as claimed by most atheist evolutionists- see Richard Dawkins 'The Selfish Gene'), then how come a large number (I think it is about 10%) aren't biologically driven to do that.

what a shamemost of your respondents are narrowminded enough to not read or understand your perfectly valid question. It doesn't matter what you (or I) personally believe- it is a strange anomally from prevailing scientific theory.

I doubt that it is genetic, I also doubt that it is any more rampant tahn it ever has been. It is just more open, so people find it easier to "come out" than they did when it was illegal. Homosexuals still existed, they were just more cautious, often living a lie.
