The DVD and video business is a very tight margin business. Low profit and big volume makes it hard for a small business operation to successfully operate. With every DVD you have, you cannot expect to have a lot of profit from it. To earn income from it, you need to have a big traffic to your store.

You need a never ending inventory, always making sure that you have several copies of the latest releases. A couple of months after the title is released, demand for it slows down so you need to make sure that the DVD is rented again and again when it is released

With Netflix and Blockbuster, it is hard for a small business to compete unless the area where you live has no Blockbuster or people are still not into renting videos online

It is a capital intensive business in terms of inventory. If you don't have enough cash, I suggest you look for another business.

Differentiate from the big ones with personal attention, maybe you can have a board with comments or recomendations from customers about a movie, you can invite a speaker and watch a movie together and discuss in a small panel., Take your time and ask the customers about the movie they rented and post that.
Differentiate from the big ones do not compete in their field.
