How long has the US been training Iraqi police and army? Was the original plan for the US to stay FOREVER just as we once occupied Germany? What do you think?

"Top U.S. officials in Iraq today predicted that Iraqi security forces could be largely self-sufficient within 12 to 18 months and said the Iraqi government is building a timetable for disarming militias, quieting insurgents and solving ongoing struggles for economic and political power.
....
But the military commander and the diplomat also emphasized that they do not view the U.S. campaign as never-ending and praised a call yesterday by Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki for a crackdown on armed militias."

Because we are now asking them to do the impossible....Iraq is in a civil war and now our political leaders are FINALLY realizing there won't be a military victory at the end of the day.

This 'crackdown' will fail and Bush can extract American troops while pointing his finger and saying 'hey it wasn't our fault - we told those eeeraquis what to do and they failed!'

The end-game is finally here

My guess is Bush will have Iraq under control just in time for the 2008 election cycle. Wouldn't want this war to translate into a loss in political power for the Republicans.

Because we were trying to give the Iraqi gov't some time to work itself out. As is the case with most arabs, all they did was gripe and back the stongest militia.

Um because now the republicans are scared election time is coming up and this is just another pathetic attempt for them to manipulate the voters.

Bush was against a timetable before he was for it.
