I was thinking of getting MIRC but I am not sure if that is any good.

Try logging on to irc.freenode.net and look at the chatrooms in there.

MIRC is a reputable chat program. See
http://www.irchelp.org for IRC new user information
http://irc.netsplit.de for IRC channel search
and the Freenode network has lots of coders (just don't mention VB!)
