Congradulations! You have just asked a question that has been bugging historians ever since the ship went down. Noone really knows how Captian Smith died. I can tell you that he did not shoot himself. There are two possabilities of his death. 1) He was last seen standing on the bridge (where they steer the ship) after that part of the ship was under water, noone saw him. and 2) They say it could have been him that handed a baby to the men standing on top of an over turned lifeboat. That is a possability, but still, noone knows for sure. I am a Titanic historian, and I for one believe he died on the bridge.

The captain goes down with the ship. Most people say that after he gave the order to abandon ship, he locked himself on the bridge and went down with it.

A very sad story. After a long career, he was looking forward to retirement after his trip on the Titanic. One survivor claimed to have seen him in the water after the ship went down, but that claim was never verified.

There is a contemporary newspaper report giving accounts by eye witnesses (Washington Times) on this link: http://66.102.7.104/search?q=cache:YPO5psErsQ0J:www.encyclopedia-titanica.org/item/4070/+captain+smith+the+titanic&hl=en&gl=us&ct=clnk&cd=14 according to which the Captain made two attempts at suicide. The first was in the library, where he was surprised by fellow officers with a revolver in his hand and relieved of it. Efforts were subsequently made to get him onto a life raft, but he resisted and threw himself into the sea to drown.

well actually, he was my Great Uncle. (if your talking about the actual Captain of the Titanic) and he went down with the ship like every Captain should when their boat sinks.

hope this helped!

Surprisingly little is known about Smith's actions in the last two hours of the ships life. His legendary skills of leadership seem to have left him, he was curiously indecisive and unusually cautious.

He was last seem in the bridge area having given the final order to abandon ship. He appears to have made no attempt to save himself. His body, if recovered, was never identified

I always heard he went down with his ship. Most captains in that time period went down with their ship because of the nobility of it. their deaths would be erectified for doing this.
But in the books you dont hear much about him, probably because the people reporting on these Books (the surviving passangers) didn't pay much attention due to trying to save their own lives.
But I believe he went down with his ship... he had to of felt guilty for allowing it to happen.
