We see that with satalite radio you can get coverage in large areas around the world. Is the technology not there to do the same things with mobile phones? You would think it would actually be cheaper having a satalite in the sky than building all these cell phone towers. You would most likely be able to get perfect quality phone coverage anywhere on the globe.

SPace can only carry a limited amount of radio signal. Cell phones work on the principal of cells. You can get 1 billion cell phones world wide only because they have a short range as they only need to talk to their base station. The same frequency can be reused in ajacent cells.
The same is not true for sattelite phones. A satellite covers a vast area of the Earth and only a limited number of simultaneous satellite calls can take place. Basically sattelite communications cannot scale in the same way as cellular communications

Even though they have satalite coverage, the concept of being used in cell phones is not that far away. The problem they are facing is there are alot of factors, including solar winds, solar flares. and other problems involved with satalite transmission. But give about 2 to 3 yrs. It will come along eventually.

Cellular phones work fine with me. There are several ways of communicating now: we have the internet, video conferencing, texting, calling and all these that would have sounded very unreal 50 years ago...Im thankful for these already...
