Hi I am curious if anyone knows a book that a young african american girl or any young girl living in an urban society can read today that would be of some help to possibly insipre them to rise above their surroundings? I have seen much literature for men out there but few for girls and if I have bumped into things they were outdated, I mean with all due respect to people like Maya Angelou their tales may not fit with the new challenges young women are facing. So I was curious if anyone knew of a book, whether ficitonal or nonfictional, that would be able to help. Of course nonfiction would be great but I assume that being they are scarce there may not be any.

1.Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry (a book about a young African American girl living in times when EVERYBODY was racist, that just makes me so angry!)
2.African American Literature (you can guess what these two books are about)
3.African American Accomplishments
4. You don't need only books to inspire, just look at Rachel Lutrell! She is originally from Tanzania, African American, and look how far she's made it in life. She is my all-time-nothing-can change-me favorite actress. It isn't impossible for people to do good, smart, and helpful things just because of their skin color. You can also look at Bob Marley. He is my favorite music artist. Not many people make music (reggae)like he did today. Anyway, he was also successful, even though he died at a young age.=(
I have an African American fiance, and he is so sweet. Remember, there is nothing wrong, different, or unworthy about a dark skin color. In fact, many people want that tint today. I hope you can get "inspired" by somebody!

They are not as scarce as you think. I work in a women's bookstore, and I can tell you that the following are very popular, and move between fiction and non-fiction:

*Books by Sister Souljah (although i don't know if they're that inspiring)
*Books by Sapphire, an incredible poet and memoir writer
*Anthologies like Colonize This!, which have writing by young women of colour
*Harriet's Game by Marlene NourbeSe Philip
*Brown Girl in the Ring by Nalo Hopkinson (urban fantasy)
*poetry and novels of Dionne Brand

You can check magazines like Colorlines and Shameless, which have good book review sections.

Wait....are you asserting which you're a 19 year previous African American lady? i'm undecided what you recommend by that. i might comprehend some books 19 year previous ladies greater often than no longer have an interest in, yet are you particularly finding for books approximately black people or written by black people?

They're not scarce at all, but I haven't come across the book(s) you're describing or asking for.
