Remove the battery cables and clean both ends on both cables. Than remove the solenoid to starter cable and clean both ends.On some of these engines the ground was down by starter and some were below the alternator. Also do a load test on battery even though it is new. The exhaust would have to be completely plugged to cause the motor to crank over slow w/ plug wires off and would not start at all.

ATT; 84 f150 I was a mechanic at Ford , It sounds like a problem with the starter ,the starter tends to get hot and although its new does not mean it is working. If your motor is running smoothly; repeated starting is only making the starter HOT . Replace the starter, i have seen this condition before if you are using a rebuilt starter remove it and have it tested. When you set the timing did you use a timing light? If so ,your timing may be out 90 degrees, This may resault in misfire or the motor to fire on #6 instead of #1 cylinder ,unless your exhaust has a blockage, check timing It sounds likethe stiffness is drainage on the battery ,remember the battery is only for starting !If you are able, have timing set by a mechanic. Find and check the for the large cable that runs from the chassis to the engine. Sometimes it's a braided line, and it may look like a black battery cable. If you can't find it, make a new one.

sounds like battery cables themselves,, acid gets under the insulation and adds resistance to the line,
