Now this is the metaphorical question for all Otaku's, I've thought about this myself. I'm certain that Sonic and Dragon Ball Z came out relatively at the same time, but I don't know. I guess this question would have to depend on how long have the idea existed before it was used.

Theres no way that Dragon Ball Z has been out since the mid 90's, it may have came to america then but it's been in Japan for at least a decade or two since it aired. I recall their being dragon ball games for the original Nintendo, but I know that there weren't any z games until the arrival of the snes.

I did some research and found that DBZ was around way before Sonic. Sonic 1 came out in 1991, as DBZ first aired in April of 1989. Now, Sonic 2 came out in 1992, which gave just under 3 years for DBZ to introduce Super Saiyans. Plenty of time. I think it's very possible that Super Sonic is based off of Super Saiyan.

Don't listen to curious_moper. He got the dates reversed. It's DBZ that came first, and THEN Sonic (the first game came out in 1991). One of the creators of Sonic was a big fan of DBZ, so that's why Super Sonic was similar to Super Sayains.

Sonic the Hedgehog was created in the late 80's while Dragon Ball was created in the early 90's, but it wasn't until 1996 that Dragon Ball Z introduced the super saiyan...
...so it's DBZ that copies Sonic!

Super Saiyans/Super Saiya-jins have existed for longer. Akira Toriyama (the mangaka of dragonball) came up with the design idea with his editor when he realised it was easier and quicker not to colour in the hair of characters in the manga chapters. There are also other similarities between the 2 series e.g. SEVEN chaos emralds and SEVEN dragonballs.
