Screening interviews are usually pretty brief interviews, sometimes done in groups, where the interviewer asks sort of basic questions fundamental to the job positions. They're quick and questions are carefully chosen to "weed out" the people that they can tell right out are not compatible with the job. The people that are leftover go on to another, more in depth interview, probably more one-on-one that you're used to. Beware, a lot of crappy sales jobs start off with screening interviews. Make sure you ask any questions you have, too.

Screening interviews are basic interviews to get a general scope of your qualifications and personality. They may have 100s of qualified applications so they screen them to weed out potentials. Most of the time they are done over the phone. If you ever have one make sure your personality shines through you conversation. Be upbeat and professional. Remember this is a first impression hunt. If you are what they are looking for they usually ask for a formal interview right then.

Screening interviews are brief interviews designed to screen out the losers and timewasters. As seen in American Idol, some companies employ people to 'vet' a lot of job applicants quickly so they (the company) only see the very best candidates.

Depends on what you are interviewing for. . . I do screening interviews for the program that I run, to see if the applicants qualify for the program, before we get into all the rest of the paperwork. Saves a lot of time.
