We recently studied this in my economic class, a class which I'm late for as I type so I'll be quick.

There are more appealing jobs that don't require a college education to be successful at today, i.e. certain types of construction, which is a pretty much male dominated field.

The male mind is more inclined to think, "What are the immediate benefits of doing what I'm doing now?"
Meaning, younger guys don't tend to think long-term (as opposed to females who generally do think long-term).

Anyway, where I left off...

Well I believe the numbers of the past 50 years have actually changed dramatically for both sexes.
Women have gone up from about 20% to over 50% of college campuses, while men have dropped from 80% to about 50%.
It doesn't necessarily mean that less men are going to college only, just that more women are going.

The cause of this trend is that more and more women are ackowledging the importance of a college degree and seeking a higher education, than ever before. Yes, the percentage of men compared to women on campus is going down. But I doubt you'd find as significant a decline (if any) if you looked at the numbers differently - the percentage of men who pursue higher education after finishing high school. It's all a matter of what statistics you choose to look at, because you kind find statistics to support almost any theory.

Percentage of men declining just means percentage of women increasing. That's a good thing. Since we are roughly 50% of the population, we should be roughly 50% of college students.

Good thing. Not a problem for the nation. More women are attending college, and more people total (men and women) are attending. Very good thing.
