im required to read it but it's so boring. i can't understand what the author (forgot who) really wanted to convey.

Be careful what you wish for - you just might get it.
All the gaudy trinkets the world (or the Devil) offers, so seemingly attractive from afar, so tempting as to make us sell out to get them, are found to be ultimately unsatisfying when they are finally achieved.
It's only then that we realize the real worth of what we gave up to get such worthless trash.

P.S. By the way, the author is either Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (pronounced Ger Ter) or, if it's Dr. Faustus, it's Christopher Marlowe.
