the first excorcist is the scariest movie I have ever seen, and Im a horror movie fanatic, there isnt much that freaks me out, its based around an actual story of a posession, came out in the seventies. A lot of people still consider this movie to be the scariest ever made, and if that doesnt freak you out, go online and look up recordings of actual excorcisms done while you are alone at night. The sound chills you to the bone. I love to scare myself because of the thrill it gives me. So Im always looking for new and interesting things, But when it comes to scary movies I think this one is beyond anything I've ever experienced. Also try the polterguist movies. If you are looking for something different the older horror movies are way better. If you pick the right ones.
Have fun!!!
I also think the scariest movies are based around supposed real life experiences, theres a movie Im waiting to rent called an american haunting which is based around the bell witch ( the only real government confirmed haunting ) it takes place in the eighteen hundreds , Ive read up on the stories surrounding the bell witch and im pretty interested. I dont know if its going to be all that good but because I know the story behind it, Im going to be really into the movie.

The shining and The exorcist are in a different class of scary. I also love Evil Dead 2...its the perfect combination of scary and funny.

Watch the news!
In the old days the Romans fed the Christians to the lions.
In modern times we fed our children to our politicians.

That is really really really scary horror!

Not in the category of lately (except on cable reruns) I don't think you can beat the original Alien or the first half of the original Predator (ending sucked but the start in the jungle was great).

I don't get Scared by movies, but some movies graphics make me cringe
try Silent Hill. The game sucked, but the movie's pretty good
