Because the law doesn't take domestic violence seriously enough.
Hypothetical situation: I am being abused by my husband, and ine day I finally work up the curage to report it. In return I get a restraining order on him, but if he abuses me, which is illegal, then why pay ANY attention to the restraining order. So he finds where I live, and comes and puts me in the hospital for "telling"
Now the doctor knows what REALLY happend despite what I say, he informs the police, and they arrest him.
But Domestic violence is still a misdeminor, so He gets out, and what the hell do you think he's gonna do to me now....
You see how scary that situation could be, and imagine what it's like if Children are involved..
the door excuse isn't bought by intellegant people anymore, but it's just women saying face. trying to save them and their family from any MORE violence.
It's not right in any manor, but it has to be pretty damn scary for those women.

Women who claim they fell or walked into a door are too scared to tell what really happened to them. Their abuser has usually threatened them with more violence, or has threatened to hurt someone close to them if they tell. That is why so many of these brave women who do muster up the courage to leave, go somewhere they cannot be found, or try and seek refuge with someone who can protect them. I feel very sorry for those who have to stay and take any kind of abuse in order to protect others. I still stand firm and believe an abuser does not change his spots. They may become lighter and inconspicuous, but there still there. Please Women, if your reading this, the FIRST time they hit or call names, thats when you get out. The more you make excuses for them the more they do, it gives them all of the power....

Domestic violence calls are among the most dangerous calls cops have to respond to and they got disgusted at not being able to arrest these guys because the women they just beat the h-ll out of were too scared or too "in love" to press charges. I think in most states, the guy is automatically arrested now. This hopefully gives the women a chance at getting the help they need to see that they need to get out of the abusive relationship and that love isn't supposed to hurt. Oh, I forgot your door and falling question. It's easy to do, so it sounds plausible?

Some women not only take abuse but also live in fear of it , reporting the matter can make it worse for them. Also they think that maybe he wont do it again. I have never been in the position of being abused, so therefore I cannot give a truthful answer, only an opinion.

I can answer this from personal experience. I just didn't report it at all. Someone else did. My husband was from a police family. What do you think happens when a woman reports a cop? He told me that he would kill me & them my family & friends & I believed him. I was lucky. I got out. They need to start keeping violent criminals in jail (domestic abuse or not) & stop worrying about pot. ..........As for why they use that for an excuse, either their abuser tells them to say that, or they just can't think straight. I saw someone in Philly call the police on her husband after he beat her. They drove him around the block to talk to him & them let him out around the block. He came home & beat her even worse.

Just because they might "know better" doesn't mean they feel safe enough to tell the truth. Abusers are great con artists......they first convince the victim they are not worthy of anything, then they instill the fear factor, then the abuse begins and will escalate until one of them dies or the victim gets help.
Don't be quick to judge....be quick to help.

I think the reason why most women who are abused say this because they are afraid of the abuse getting worse if they say anything, it is also possible that they were raised around/in of an abusive relationship when they were growing up

Its becuase they havent yet reached that point where they want to leave their abuser. They still believe somewhere in their hearts that he loves her and the behaviour will one day stop. So they lie to protect him and not face up to the reality of whats happening. Also shame plays a big part and they believe ppl wont understand and be able to help them. Some of them think they brought it on themselves or deserve it.

Because most women are afraid to admit what really happend. Alot of women are brainwashed to believe that the man did no wrong so they will make up tons of excuses for them

On one hand they feel ashamed for what has happened and try to minimize in their minds the abuse but on the other hand they use the obvious excuses as a cry for help!
