Even with the testing now it is still forbidden. Such is the fear of AIDS. Not much can be done, I for one have a rarer blood type but will not subject myself to justifying my life. I store my own blood through a private agency.

Whenever anyone donates blood (in Canada at least) you have to fill out a form that shows your sexual history and whether you have been exposed to certain diseases. Using the information on the form, it's determined whether your blood is eligible for donation or not.

the only people forbidden from giving blood are those that have been out of country to a 3rd world country. and there would be documentation on that to prevent them. as for gays not alowed to give well lets just say your full of it and it makes me wonder how and where you get your information becuase your source is also full of it. get a life. do research before spouting some bullcrap like that.

Since Reagan, it has been illegal for a 'practicing homosexual' to give blood.

The Red Cross have fought every effort to have this law repealed. They are the last organization standing against a change that would allow all people to donate.

Note that all blood is now screened; and that there are no restrictions on black men (many on the down low) who are passing HIV to their wives/girlfriends. The fastest growing HIV+ population is black women - no restriction there either.

If you dislike the Red Cross policy - write to them and explain why you will NOT be donating to future Red Cross appeals. You can always give in other ways to charities; you don't have to support a homophobic one.

In Canada the Red Cross will not accept blood from gays. It is considered a risky lifestyle and the blood is rejected. But don't feel its just gays who are excluded. prostitutes and persons who use intravenous drugs are also excluded.

According to the FDA, male donors are asked "Have you had sex with another male , even once, since 1977?" and female donors are asked "In the past 12 months, have you had sex with another male who has had sex, even once, since 1977 with another male?" with a yes answer meaning that they do not accept a blood donation.

A male who has had sex with a male (since 1977) or a female who has had sex with a male who has had sex with another male (since 1977) is not eligible to donate blood. A woman who has had sex with another woman is not prevented from donating blood.
