By deffinition, cancer really is almost an evolutionary thing. By genetics some people are more prone to the phenomena of degenerate cells, so that particular line of people would be less likely to survive if not for reproduction. on that note however, enviromental influences that cause cancer can negate the modern validity of human evolution in regards to cancer due to the fact that anymore we all seem to know how generally avoid cancer. Cancer, being simply mutated cells, essentially comes down to when evolution goes wrong.

Cancer has been known to man since medicine was first created, and animals almost definitely were experiencing cancer before mankind had even evolved. Hippocrates described cancer as early as 400 BCE, but it wasn't a new phenomenon at that time.

Probably about 300 million years ago. Even fish can get cancer.
