pcmcia and pci are different...... The pcm-cia card is a card that slips into the side of your laptop.... (about the size of a charge card). The pcm-cia can take the place of something that's not internal (like a NIC card or modem)

A PCI card is internal to a desktop computer. All it is - is a certain sized slot that many things come in..... You can get PCI video card, PCI modem, PCI NIC Card.... It just is reserved for an item that will go into that specific slot. There are usually 4-6 PCI slots...

What pcmcia does?
its a slot in a laptop computer in which you can slide cards into
There are many things you can do with it.
There are cards for;
Wireless Internet
Telephone(modem)cards.
Usb Adapters.
Firewire interface Adapters.
Card readers and so on.
But,the new standard is or becomes Express cards so if you have to buy a new laptop buy one with that standard as more and more cards will be on the market.
Its also much faster.
but,on the other hand,why need a slot like that if most of the things you need are already built in features in modern laptops.
One thing would come handy though,a card reader if not built in.
