Wow! You guys are awesome with your responses. The company I work for is relocating (45 miles from my house). I have a family that I do not want to be away from for more than 10 hours a day, but I like/want my income. I've tried to find a new job closer to home, but the market is slow. I also have an issue with 'going backward' in my career. I could find a job for less money closer to home, but then I would lose my career level. Make sense?

Does your employer offer flex-time work schedules?

If you could arrange to go in at 6am, you'd be off around 2:30pm. Or spend the morning with your kids, take them to school, then stay until 6pm.
Might not hurt to ask your employer if the job you do is relatively independent.

And you might consider perking up your commute with tapes recorded by your kids, a new language, even a hand-held recorder to make notes, etc. for your day. And if you have the minutes on your cellphone, consider "tuning" into your family's morning routine and talking your way to work.
Good luck with your decision.

NO, I would not. After you figure the milage, gas cost, tires, extra oil changes and whatever goes wrong with your car you will be surprised at the cost to you.

I would not want to be on the road for 7.50 hours a week. That is almost an entire day spent behind the wheel. Plus getting up earlier and arriving home later.

Prepare the old "pros/cons" list and see how it turns out. Maybe it is worth it to you. It also depends on your current job situation. If you do not have a job, it would be worth it. Are you moving up in your field? Will you enjoy the job better than the one you are leaving? There are a lot of things to consider.

Absolutely! In fact, one of my first jobs, 20 years ago, involved a 110 mile round trip commute for $6/hour.

Many people drive farther for less money. My father commuted that far for years, but he was in a car pool and only drove once a week.

It would all depend on the kind of person. I personally get tired of driving long distances, so I probably wouldnt unless my only other options were much much less pay.

Not with the current cost of gas. Plus, it's a lot of time spent on the road rather than with your family (if you have one).

45 miles each way sure why not in my car that would only be 3 gallons of gas a day

Hell no. But if it was the only nibble I had, then I would take the job and move closer.

I would if I had a car that got good gas mileage. In fact I have driven farther for less money.
