Have managed to drop the entire Desktop into the trash - I think from user folder - and cannot restore it. Have tried dropping it back into the user file and have tried dropping files back on desktop from Trash but it still says that the files are in the trash. Any help would be gratefully accepted! Thanks.

For the record, the correct way to restore files to the Desktop is to log out and then log back in and then drag the files from the Trash. The Desktop file is automatically replaced when logging back in.

Not enough info. "It still says the files are in the trash" might mean you get some kind of message??? Maybe quoting the exact words in the message will help us a lot.
Let's see what you may have. Do you have more than one user account? Did you manage to drag the files from another user's desktop folder to the trash? And did you manage to do this after you logged in as root user? Did you get a message that you do not have enough permission to move the items out of the trash? If you did happen to login as root user, just login as root again and move the files back to the correct user's desktop folder.
If you have the "not enough permissions" message and you are sure this didn't come about by logging in as root, you can try running the "Repair permissions" option in the Disk Utility. Never helps me but maybe it will help your issue.
If that didn't work and you are desparate, you can use the Terminal application to change the ownership of the files to your admin user. Then you can move them out of the trash. This process is very detailed so get a real Mac guru to sit with you and do it step by step.

If you simply put files in the Trash you can restore them by opening the Trash (left-click on the Trash icon) and drag the files from the Trash to your Desktop or other desired location.
2. "Time machine" is a built-in backup tool that works with your Mac and an external drive, As the problem you described, I read it. The files deleted in Trash bin could be a different problem which Time machine can't solve. you can read this article and learn more. I hope it will help.
3. If you don't have a Time Machine backup yet, then your best option would probably be uFlysoft Data Recovery for mac software

The normal way to retrieve files from the trash is just to drag them out into a different folder. Try copying and pasting them if that doesn't work.

Do you quite have international of Warcraft? it quite is totally aggressively centred by undercover agent ware and keyloggers, so my first concept is, it is a few variety of malware designed to trick you into logging in, so as that they could snare your username/password. particular, a number of those issues exist on the mac, and if so it quite is welded in extraordinarily deep. you have rebooted perfect? (I ask given which you so hardly could, and it often times helps.)

Oooh, I don't know about Mac, but in Windows, you just highlight the thing you want to restore, right click it, ahd click 'restore'. Maybe that will help? Sorry if it doesn't!
