I have an 04 Mercury Sable and lately when i try to put fuel in it, it won't let me. Let me explain.....ya know when you're topping off your cars tank the gas pump handle will automatically click off? Well, that happens to me but my tank is not full. It litterally takes me like 30 minutes to fill the damn thing up cuz the pump handle keeps clicking off. I have tried other gas pumps and gas stations. Its not the pumps, its definately my car. I have a warranty on it and i'm gonna take it in, i'm just curious in the mean time.

I'm kinda agreeing with the first response i got. I HAVE TRIED putting the nozzle all the way in, out a little, out alot, turning it, twisting it, squeezing the pump handle just a little, squeezing it alot. NOTHING WORKS. But thanks for all your answers. Much appreciated! I'm calling the dealer tomorrow incase it is that clogged vent.

tanks have vents. if air can't get out, fuel can't get in. sounds like you have a stopped up vent line. should be a piece of cake for a dealership.

Yeah, try moving the nozzle, also instead of holding the pump wide open, try about half-way. It slows the gas feed and prevents the pressure from hitting the valve in the nozzle so fast, that way it doesn't click off.

I have had the same problem, but before you take your car into the dealership (even though its under warranty) try pulling the handle out a little bit. If you shove it all the way in sometimes it keeps shutting itself off because the handle has a sensor that stops it before it overflows out of the tank you may be tripping the flow sensor in the handle. so try pulling the handle out about an inch or so and it should be fine. if it doesnt work then take it in

I have an older truck and it does that to me also. Even my newer van does it. I think it is the angle of the nozzle in the gas tank it causes the gas to bounce back against the gas nozzle and triggers the sensor. Move the nozzle in a different angle. That's my opinion , I hope it helps.

In addition to not putting the nozzle in all the way try using a slower fill rate. The sensor is very sensitive and it doesn't take much to trip it. If the fuel can't get down the fill spout fast enough it's gonna trip.

A quick fix/check. If you have the pump nozzle all the way in the filler opening, try pulling it back out a bit. I think this will fix your problem. Why? had it happen to me on a Ford.

Has the car been in an accident? Check the downtube to the tank for any deformities. Also take a flashlight and check fill pipe fr. the inside Some cars have finicky fillers but not to your extreme.

Your flow vent charcoal filter is jammed. You continually attempted to put more gas in when the shut off valve clicked. Dealer needs to replace the filter.
I do not recall this being a warranted item. Expect to pay wherever you go for a repair

Ford has a problem with this on the new Mustang too. Here's a website of a guy where I live that is having the same problem.

You can try to turn the nozzle sideways, but this guy told me it didn't work.

it sounds like there is a clog in the gas line and the fuel keeps filling the line an drains into the tank slowly
