The whole idea of "warming up the car" is actually a practice of letting the car run at idle for two to three minutes before actually driving it. This will allow the motor oil time to warm up and flow much better to the top end of the engine, thus reducing the engine wear.
It is a good practice and well worth doing if you want to keep your car in good mechanical condition.
Good question !!

No it is not. 2 minutes is enough time to warm the engine up. Now if you want HEAT in the car it will warm up faster if you drive it. Otherwise letting it run for 15 minutes will have to do. Depending on how cold the morning is you should start to get heat (From an Idle) in around 5 minutes.

Hi excessive running with out any load on the engine will create premature wear , ideally run for 3 mins or so then drive ,as the engine warms up quicker whilst driving. Also idling it that long is a total waste of fuel.

I have always been told to do so, I don't think you need to let it run for 15 minutes, it gets the oil to all the moving parts also use a lighter weight motor oil.

Yes. I forgot the specific terms, but something doesn't flow into the motor or something of that nature in lower temperatures. After the car heats up, whatever it is flows into the motor.

Wow. I suck. All I know is that yes, it is necessary.

UNLESS YOU PARK IT IN A GARAGE, IT'S BEST TO WARM UP THE MOTOR BEFORE YOU DRIVE IT IN THE WINTER. IT WILL ALSO DEFROST YOUR WINDOWS SO YOU CAN SEE.
