It usually is a short note applying for the job as most of your personal stuff is on your CV.
Try along these lines
Dear Sir/Madam or the name of the person
I would like to apply for your current vacancy as .(job title) as advertised in (Newspaper or Job Centre)
I would be able to attend an interview at your convenience if selected.
Have also enclosed CV as instructed.
Yours faithfully or sincerely (If u have the name of the person)
Good luck

Your covering letter, should state which job you are applying for and a small paragraph detailing why you think you would be a suitable candidate for that job, either by highlighting qualifications or any relevant employment experience.
If the advert requests a handwritten cover note, hand write it! If not, type it. Check all spellings and layout. Think of it as an introduction, and that first impressions count!
If they dont like your letter, they might not bother to read your CV!

Your covering letter would just be from yourself stating which postition you are applying for or if you just want your application put on file until a suitable position becomes available.
Good luck = )

Name, address, date. say what job you are applying for, where you saw the advert and why you consider yourself suitable for the job. Also say that you are enclosing your CV. Good Luck.
