Secrets are left untold so they do not hurt others in the family. But I happen to think and ideal family would be completely open and honest about everything. Families work together to move past a bump in the road. :-)

Secrets usually come back to bite us, so I think one must consider the secret and why it is a secret as well as the ages of those involved. Issues between parents are not secrets, they're private matters. If it is a health issue then when those who are or will be affected are able to understand then tell. If you think about how you might talk about intimate relationships with a child that will help you to consider what to tell someone and when.

If by family you mean husband wife or children in parents then yea some secrets are better left untold. Especially if its husband wife things why know everything about someones past all that does is create doubt that shouldn't be there no need to tell your hub about some college one night stand when you feel bad enough about it...... Somethings are better kept to yourself.

Of course. Here you have the perfect situation for the Don't ask, Don't tell policy. No one in this world is entitled to know everything there is to know about you but you. So if they don't ask don't volunteer the information. And if it's something that will upset a perfect situation don't ask. Now really listen to yourself in you have secret because it might be something important to someone else or dangerous to yourself. If you feel that you need to be truthful or just speak out do so after weighing of the benefits and disadvantages of your action.

I think it depends on the secret. If the secret is something from the past, that has nothing to do with right now and it would hurt those people, then it's best to be left unsaid.

I don't think secrets from one's partner are ever "ideal"...however there are times when it's probably best not to share some things, just to be sharing them...but if asked, answer honestly...
