Yes it is true. I am a native. However, you do not tip the attendant. Only in extreme circumstances - they change your oil for you or something. Also, the gas in New Jersey is nearly the cheapest in the country despite the self-service ban (this is due in part to New Jersey having one of the lowest gas taxes).

I've lived in New Jersey all my life and the only time I pump gas is when I leave the state. It's wonderful to not have the smell of gas on your hands, or not have to get out of the car in the winter.
The gas station attendents get paid and there is no tipping at all. Even New Yorkers come to New Jersey to have someone pump gas for them and because it is cheaper here.

Yes. I went though NJ on my way to NY and got out to pump my own gas. I was told real quick that it was a no no. Also, you are suppose to tip the guy that pumps it for you.

True, but it's also some of the cheapest gas in the country so no one can complain. Like they said above- no tipping unless they did something really special like cleaning off your winshield in freezing cold weather.

All full service and def no tips! It is their job, they are not doing us a favor. No one here tips!

yup that's true and you end up having to pay even more money because you have to tip the guy that pumps it for you
