Sometimes it feels like I'm being bullied, but other times I think maybe in this world you do have to own a phone just to be taken seriously. I'm in two minds about the whole situation. So - can I "be serious" without a phone, or should I just give in and get one?

Everyone should have a mobile phone, why would you not? It is affordable and you can get rid of the archaic "home phone". By your question it seems as though you are about 13 or so years old. I don't think you need a phone to "be serious" whatever that means....but you do need a phone if you are trying to be in today's world. These people that respond to this question by saying they don't have or don't need a cell phone don't have a life or a real job. Even stay at home Mom's should have a cell phone.

I think people need a phone, for communication, not to be cool, and these days I think that the cost and restriction of running a land line, only able to take calls at home, makes a mobile a cheaper and much more flexible option than a conventional land line.
In fact I think conventional land lines would cease to exist altogether if it were not for the fact that broadband includes a phone service.

I'm 18 and I've never had a cell phone. I actually think they're pretty pointless. Who is everyone always talking to? I've never felt the need to use one, they just seem like a novelty item to me. We got along fine without them 20 years ago.

You can definitely be serious without a cellphone, but I think you should get one for safety. What if you're in a car accident or have an emergency? Having a cellphone ensures that you can call someone fast and get help. If you don't really like to speak on cellphones socially, then don't do it, and don't give everyone your number. But you should get one for emergencies.

I own a phone but dont want to. A cell phone is a way to tie you to society. Watch people.. when their phone rings they almost feel obligated to answer it. Your friends probably just want to be able to reach you easier, if you want to be reached easier, get one. Otherwise tell them to shove their phones up their "@ss's

Do whatever you want that suits your lifestyle. Although having a cell phone helps a lot. But if you prefer to keep it mysterious, then don't get it or get those pay-as-you-go phones from Virgin, Boost Mobile, Ampt?

If you don't need it or can't afford it, don't get one, it might just be a uneeded expense. My husband and I each have one, but that is mainly because we don't have a house phone. and if they are going to give you crap because you don't have one, they just need to grow up or give some good reasons to get one
