A couple of my friends recently told me that elevators don't list the 13th floor under the buttons...they said that they just go from 12 to 14 and skip 13 because it's bad luck...that just sounds very strange and impractical to me...is it true?

..or dexter lives, you changed your name on me. Thanks to all the other answers, they were very interesting. I didn't know that about China either and my friends also said how some places will just use the floor for storage instead. Very strange!

Depends where you live. It is common in the US not so much elsewhere. In China and Hong Kong they do not have floors ending in 4 in many buildings because the word for 4 sounds very like the sound for the word death.

It depends on the elevator/building. I've found that in general the older buildings typically omit the 13th floor, while more modern ones do not. Most likely superstition is beginning to give way to practicality as far as this design is concerned, although buildings that already do not have a 13th floor aren't changed (whether for superstitious reasons or historic ones). But I'm thinking it will gradually be phased out.
But yes, there are still many high rise buildings whose floors skip from 12 to 14.

Your answer: between the stupid issues about the 13th floor superstition is that the floor count number varies depending the position you're at. In Europe you do not count number the floor floor as style one. Many inns in the States have floor one the position you come back in as one, notwithstanding the actually have mezzanines and many have floor flooring below were you enter were there are eating places and boutiques. on the Kowloon of Hong Kong we stayed in a chinese shuttle business business enterprise inn. We took an elevator to the 9th floor walked down a hall to a flight of 10 steps into yet another hall were the room replaced into. there is no authentic thanks to count number the flooring so that you in basic terms ought to flow by technique of the numbers on the elevator buttons. One inn I stayed at maychronic 13th floor fearers loopy, and that i doubt they could ensure out the position it replaced into in any respect. there have been no steps or certainly flooring. there replaced right into a ramp that began in the foyer and also you punched on your room style on what gave the effect of a telephone dial. The elevator might want to end on the elevator doors nearest your room.

Yes, it is true in some cases. A lot of older buildings do not have the 13th floor listed, they just jump from 12-14. It's not as common in new buildings. See the wikipedia article.

I worked in a hotel MANY years ago and the 13th floor was storage. Only the service elevator went there. It was supposed to be a restaurant but that never happened. Maybe because it was bad luck, I went to that floor ONCE and it was creepy.

Yes, in most cases in America and, as mentioned, in China there is no floor 4. Sometime the floor is named rather than numbered and sometimes it just skipped - meaning floor 14 is really floor 13.

True in America, and in China there is no floor 4. Even stranger is there is no floor 4 or 13 in the american embassy in china. To avoid this either the numbers skip like you said or the floor is named rather than numbered

Not in all countries.
Only in countries which believe in this superstition. The superstition originated from 'the last supper'
where there were 13 at the table. In reality what happened at this supper and after had nothing to do with 13. It was a fact and a coincidence that there was the Christ and his 12 disciples!
