The only way that there would be a civil war in Britain in the next five years would be if an extremist organisation such as the BNP were elected to power. Both the Tories and Labour are to sensible to bring in legislation that would form a catalyst for civil war. However if the government were to keep treating the armed forces in the Kack-handed way that they have been treating them, there could be a military coup.

The British population are probably among the most accepting, compliant and tolerant people anywhere in the world. It is the British way not to rock the boat, we may grumble a lot but seldom any more than that. However, in this country we have an immoral, incompetent and totally discredited government who have totally lost control and are manipulated by the press barons. Minority groups appear to have the upper hand, laws and justice are meeted out by unelected foreign powers and the basic fabric of our society is being destroyed. I personally believe the fuse is getting very short on the public temper and I think if things carry on the way they are, one of two things will happen.

Political parties such as the BNP who are currently gaining support will get their act together and start to create a serious opposition, or law and order will completely break down requiring force to bring things under control. I don't know if that can be classed as civil war, but such things have occurred in Britain many times before.

No. Civil wars happen when there are two large opposing sides, who disagree VERY strongly with each other, about very important issues, or if the government is very weak and cannot control the people who are all vying for power.

The first type has happened to many western countries - in Britain because of disputation about the divine right of kings, and about religion, in the US about slavery and the issue of federalism, in Spain because of a dispute about which form of government (anarchy, democracy, fascism or communism). Notice there was no 'race war' as predicted by many people, the civil rights movement in the US was largely peaceful, and immigrants to the UK didn't cause a civil war - this issue is not divisive enough.

The second type of civil war only really comes about because of weak government - i.e. in Iraq and many African countries. When a government either leaves suddenly (like the Belgians in the Congo) or is deposed (like Iraq or Afghanistan), especially in countries not used to democracy then the country falls into tribalism with bands of warlords fighting each other for control. This could only happen in the UK if we were invaded by a country who wants to dispose of democracy - and there is no country powerful enough to do that - even China would probably keep democracy, at least in some form.

So no civil war in the UK in the forseeable future

Britain is at risk of becoming ungovernable and yes, a civil war situation is possible, if certain things happen. For one, if the muslim terrorists were ever able to do half of what they want to do, there would be little public patience for them. The 'light touch' approach to government means that the private sector - and the City - gets away with whatever it wants. That destabilises the country's institutions, and brings about the sort of crises we have seen in the past (Poll Tax riots, IRA terrorism etc.).

No - we have always had civil conflict, and not since the 18th century (one could argue that the Jacobite rebellions were forms of civil war) has this spilled over into armed warfare. And the level of civil conflict we have at the moment is far below most decades of the last 100 years (look at the 1920s - Depression - 1910s - Anarchists and post WWI strife - 1970s - mass unemployment and the end of Empire - for some examples).

I don't think that there will be a civil war, but more likely to have a race war though.

If certain issues continue in the UK, I certainly can see some kind of unrest, but civil war? I think thats a bit extreme, but who knows.

No. Limited civil disorder in some areas maybe, all-out civil war... not a chance.
