It's not legal for people to behave that way with food. If a server or other staff member intentionally contaminates food, and anyone witnesses, they could be in serious trouble. Their trouble could increase if, and probably when, the customer receiving such treatment gets ill or dies. Thanks to stringent laws, I doubt any owner/manager of a place that serves ingestible items would allow for such things to stand, and would probably fire the person/people doing it.

I work at a major Chain restaurant ( named like a beatles song) anyway we watched the movie and i too was grossed out, I've been waiting tables for 22 years ( part time in college, when i was outta work etc) and i have NEVER seen anyone in any of the restaurants that I worked at, behave like that or mess with anyone's food. However you should follow then golden rule and not mess with anyone who handles your food.. just kidding. Look at the restaurant as a whole. is it clean? are the restrooms clean? if the managment keeps the store in check and makes sure that it's clean they then will also be making sure that the employees ( kitchen and servers) are doing things the right way. Note, the movie was funny, if you've EVER worked in a restaurant, then you know someone who acts like someone in that movie.

I've worked in a restaurant for 10 years and have never seen so much as a roach or any sort of things that happened in that movie.
If you are a regular a certain establishment, try to take notice to see if the employees eat there a lot. Where I worked a lot of us would eat there. Also, what type of people work there? If they seem to be lower-class, uneducated people, chances are you'll be more at risk for this type of activity.
Also, check the cleanliness of uniforms. I've been in some restaurants where the servers seem to have been wearing the same shirt w/o washing for weeks. If management is this lax about uniform standards, then they aren't going to be to strict about the back of the house (kitchen).

A lot of restaurants run clean, hygienic operations. Ask around, ask the employees who work there and even check with the health department.

Also, it can never hurt to be polite and courteous to your server...just in case.

It's simple! Don't be a rude, condescending b i t c h to your server like that one woman in the movie and you won't have any problems. Servers entertain thoughts of jacking up food when they encounter jerks like this. I don't condone jacking up anyone's food, but if you're going to be rude, impolite, and condescending when you speak to a server, well then....

Would you talk to a friend, family member, or even a stranger on the street in such a manner? Yes, I know you're a paying customer and all that, but that's no excuse for rude behavior. There are other ways to resolve any problems you may be having with the restaurant. Treating the staff like they're lower than dirt is not the way to go about it!

I only watch that last week, it was gross but funny and true.
I use to work for McDonalds and some people would drop food on the floor and still serve it gross.
I heard a story when i was little that a kfc in my town had something in its colslaw.(it comes out of men), that was disgusting it was in the local newspaper.
Believe me if you treat the waitress/waiters like crap they are likely to do something. So be nice and tip!
