Abortion SHOULD be a non-issue. Abortion should never have been an issue since the Roe v. Wade decision settled the whole thing. Yes, abortion is just a vote-grabber, and considering that almost all politicians are MEN, I'm even more confused about why this is an issue. Every time I here a man say "I don't agree with abortion", I want to tie his balls in a knot around his neck and scream "It's got nothing to do with you, f*ckwit!!".
You want to outlaw abortion? Fine. But do it on one condition: A vasectomy is a minimally invasive, easily reversible procedure. All single males over the age of 15 should be required to have a vasectomy. ALL of them. You wanna have kids? Get married first, prove that you are mature and finacially responsible enough to raise a child, and then you pay, out of pocket to have your vasectomy reversed. ABORTION PROBLEM SOLVED!!!

Here's why abortion is such a wedge issue in the US.... the country was forced to accept as law "abortion on demand". This is VERY different from the policies on abortion in other western countries. I'm all for legal abortion - but there should at least be some kind of restraints (3rd trimester abortions are pretty silly... unless it is a case of rape/incest then a woman doesn't get to decide not to have a baby after it's already ready to live outside the womb). In countries like France and Sweden abortion is legal - but the government has excellent safety nets for a poor and single moms that are worried about the burdon of a having a child. They are concerned about life before AND AFTER a child is born - in America people don't seem to give a damn about children once they are actually born. Women are encouraged to have the baby and are told that they can either count on government support or give the child up for adoption into a good home....
I think the polarization comes from the fact we never reached a consensus on the issue - it was decided by a court. If we could have come up with a mutually acceptable solution (like they did in France, Sweden, Germany, Britian, ect...) then I don't think we'd be seeing abortion as such a big issue.

The figure does not indicate that 98% would never consider abortion! It indicates that only 2% have one, because they had an accidental pregnancy and are in an age range or circumstance where it is the best option. Abortion is not immoral. Yes, the issue is used to get religious voters all hot and bothered. Cant think, cant vote for anyone else red in the face, attacking doctors etc .Along with gay marriage, also a very small minority.

I was not going to answer until I read Loudstorm's theory that every man woman and child in America get pregnant every year.
The 2% off 300mill theory is great.
I am a somewhat free thinking California resident. I do not know or know of anyone that has or is planning to have an abortion.
That does not mean they don't exist It just means It is not as Universal as many on Yahoo Answers claim.
So I also think it is an issue that could be dealt with in other ways more successfully.

Abortion is arguable through fact of there are various human beings on the two factors of the priority;for and against abortion. the persons who're for abortion are specially catholic people who believe that lifestyles starts at theory. besides the shown fact that, there are merely some people who believe that abortion should not be used as a type of beginning administration, the lady merely aborting a fetus while she fails to apply condoms or the tablet, and so on. people who're for abortion often say that the unborn little one could be a genius, the only to treatment maximum cancers, and so on. besides the shown fact that, the anti-abortionists say that for all they recognize the little one might additionally be a rapist/assassin. so as that argument has little advantage. the persons who're for abortion believe that a woman ought to have the possibility to do what she likes along with her very own physique. Forbidding abortions might create a slippery slope, that we would all slide down till no one had any rights over their bodies till each person agreed on the medical technologies. additionally, abortions are on occasion needed for the psychological or actual well-being of the fetus and the mummy. contained concerning rape, to illustrate, no woman must be compelled to have their rapist's little one. additionally, teenage mothers are on occasion compelled to provide up their early lifestyles, and mentally ill sufferers or drug addicts might heavily harm the fetus, or be no longer able to handle being pregnant. There are additionally situations wherein attempting out is performed, and the fetus is set to have a terrible incurable ailment, and the little one might in easy terms have a short lifestyles of discomfort. Then, the mummy and father must be allowed to decide for to abort. the persons on the two factors of this situation have very stable critiques. it rather is the main reason of such controversy. Neither decision is the ideal decision in all circumstances, that's precisely why the arguments have persevered for see you later.

Because no one knows about the figures you just quoted. Your right, we shouldn't be so crazed over such an apparently small issue. The problem is the religious fanatics and republican right wingers that won't let it or anything else go that they think will stir up a fight. And abortion will stir up a fight quicker than a spoon. It is such a personal issue....it effects your heart and mind and emotions on both sides....thanks for the info...

i agree! Im totally against abortion. But i dont understand why they are making it such an issue if only 2% of the population is taking that route. My guess is they want to band it completely.

Well this is because neo-con fascists want to control people's lives. Fascism is a far right concept where the government lays down every rule and regulation for how people live.
I couldn't imagine a decent human being who enjoys having an abortion. If they do... thank god they are having one because they are sick (like how I said thank god). Abortion is a necessary part of society which should be tolerated. I wonder how the neo-con fascists would feel if their wife and/or daughter were raped and forced go through the humiliating pregnancy of a rape baby.
If Roe v. Wade were overturned it would turn back the clock on civil liberties. Why don't we just tell black people to sit in the back of the bus while we are at it?
A good bumper sticker said, "If you don't like abortion, don't have one."

There are strong pro-life and pro-abortion factions in the far right and far left of this country that vote in larger numbers than those in the middle. Your question on "grabbing-votes" is valid. Single issue voters are consistent in their political activity and politicians know it. However, I think most people in the middle are more concerned with approving limitations on partial birth abortions, parental notification/approval, spousal notification/approval and other valid limitations on abortion.

Because it is an easy target for both sides of the aisle. Again, if people just minded their own business, we would be a much better country. If drugs were legal, only a small percentage would abuse them (just as only a small percentage of people abuse alcohol and cigarettes). For most people, abortion is not an option, not because it is available or not available, but because it is wrong for them.
Most Americans realize that abortion is a personal choice - and a choice that most people take seriously.
