If they work, no -- ugly isn't illegal.
But if they don't work very well, you may be able to. Get a good thermometer, and see if the oven really does cook at the temperature it's claiming to; make sure all areas of the fridge are keeping food at a safe temperature.
If you're a good tenant, you may be able to negotiate something even if they're working perfectly -- depends on the landlord, your rent compared to market rents, etc. Does he have any reason to give you an incentive to stay? Would you be willing to sign on for another year if they were replaced?
Also, my best success in getting 'upgrades' over years of renting were with landlords who owned a number of units -- whenever one with a better such-and-such was vacant, I'd ask if I could swap it for the one I had. So, if the landlord has a vacant apartment with better appliances, you might be in luck, especially if you offer to move them yourself.

As long at the appliances are in good working order then he in under no obligation to replace them. However, you might get the landlord to replace them if you can convince him that the old ones have already been written off so new appliances could be used as a new write off on his taxes.

If you really want new appliances you should buy your own and give the landlord back his ugly ones.

How does your lease read? Have you asked for your appliances to be replaced? I think you may have to replace them yourself but that all depends on your lease if it says your to be provided with Stove and refrigerator washer and dryer etc... Then if it does you would further have to see if it says how old or new the appliances are to be...

They would probably argue that you accepted them as they were when you signed the lease. Your landlord is responsible for keeping your unit in a livable condition but is not required to make purely cosmetic repairs. Landlords are generally greedy people. This article may be of interest to you.

Only if they are not functioning up to code. But remember you landlord does not have to supply these things unless it is in your lease. My friends fridge went out and she ended up having to buy a new one because it wasn't stated in her lease that the landlord was to supply one.

Ya, next time your lease is up tell him your going to move unless he updates them. Also offer to sign a longer lease if he is willing to do it.

no, but if they break, your landlord probably has to fix them (check your lease for specifics of your landlord's obligations)
