You can find great sale prices on Epiphone models, 150 to 300 dollars, I wouldn't reccomend anything cheaper than that

Acoustic or electric?
If you are interested in Electric I would get a Fender Squire "Strat Pack". They run around $150 and come with a small amp, cable, strap, tuner, picks, and a nice Fender Squire guitar. In short, it's everything you need to get started along with a guitar that is good enough that even a pro wouldn't be embarrassed playing it.
As for acoustics, you can get a cheap one for under $100. However, with acoustics there is a big trade off between quality and price since the tone comes from the wood and craftsmanship rather than from electronics.

Are you looking for an acoustic or electric?
And what kind of style are you wanting to play?
There are probably some decent music stores in your area where you can talk to professionals and get an idea of what might be best for you.
Other points to consider is the size of your hand.
If you have a big hand, you might consider getting a classical-style guitar, which means the fretboard will be wider and easier to place your fingers.
As for cost, I checked with Musician's Friend on-line.
A cheap acoustic runs around $50.00 and a cheap electric for around $90.00.
But try a lot of guitars so that you get a feel for what is out there.
Ultimately your choice depends on your style, what feels and sounds right to you.
It is worth it to spend a little more for something that you will be happy with.

DON'T BUT A CHEAP GUITAR!!! It's easy to get sucked into buying the $70 Wal-Mart special, but take it from somebody who knows: they are crap! They dont stay in tune, they are difficult to play, and they will only discourage you. Then after a while, the neck will start to pull away from the body and you'll have to throw it away. Your local music store will have lots of selections for beginner packages made by reputable companies like Ibanez, Yamaha, or Fender. Acoustic packages start at around $179 and electric packages with amp and everything start at around $249. Anything cheaper than this and it will be difficult to learn on.

You can buy a set with bag, tuner, and video tape to help you learn for around $150. It is a cheap one that is still good enough to keep for a while, even after you get better and are looking to buy a new one.
