I absolutely unrecommend all those Christian bands that kymmy_kins recommended, since they are even more boring than mainstream rock bands.
Anyway, it really depends what genre you're into. Every genre has undiscovered bands in it, you just have to dig deep to find the talented ones. A couple of my favorite more modern rock bands are Deadboy And The Elephantmen and Spoon, but I'm more experienced in METAL bands that many people don't know about! ;)

Violent Femmes, Suicidal Tendencies, The Dead Milkmen, The Circle Jerks, Iggy and The Stooges, Warren Zevon, Primus, Sublime, Uncle Bonsai, The Crazy 8's, Billy Rancher and The Unreal Gods, The Offspring, Tool, Filter....there are tons out there!
Go to an independent music store (not Tower, Sam Goody or those mainstream places) and ask for some suggestions.

THE GUFS!!! This is one of my all time favorite bands! I'll send a burned cd if you'd like... Send me an email if you're interested! Check them out at myspace or at www.thegufs.com/forums. Wy cool Milwaukee/Chicago based Rock band (very popular in this area), toured with Matchbox Twenty, have two Atlantic releases, have been around for like seventeen years, have a new album that was just released (independent label), etc. I am so serious... Check-out The Gufs...
