The main reason is to make money for doctors. It's also a fashion thing - but very 20th Century; people don't do it much anymore. It cuts down on sexual sensation dramatically for both the mutilated man and his partner.

Please don't do this barbaric thing to yourself or your baby son. Men are born perfect - they don't need to have a healthy, useful body part chopped off!

There is no medical purpose. Reseach shows no difference in terms of hygiene or STD transmission rates in circumcised and uncircumcised men.

Jews and Muslims are required by their religion to have circumcision, but there is no other reason to do this.

The American Medical Association and the American Association of Pediatrics both agree that routine circumcision is unnecessary.

In some rare cases the foreskin does not retract properly after puberty; in those cases, a circumcision may be required, but only if other methods fail to relieve the symptoms.

The purpose of circumcision in the U.S. is simply about aesthetics, and what people are used to seeing.
In the U.S., the circumcision rate is almost 92%, compared to less than 25% in countries like England (and most other European countries). The percentage drops even more in Caribbean, Central and South American countries. Unfortunately, misinformation and lack of education has created a modern american society which sees an uncircumcised man as a disease-ridden, cancer-spreading, sex fiend. The most widely used reasons are disease, and hygiene.....If this were true, the population of most European countries would have been extinct for centuries. The truth is that people in the U.S. have been bombarded for years with fear campaigns, and talk about "Look how clean-cut it looks compared to an uncircumcised one". It's gotten to the point where people look at someone who is uncircumcised as some kind of alien from another planet. The foreskin has it's purpose, just alike a woman's major and minor labia, and clit hood have their purpose. I repeat what another fellow answerer quoted on this forum...
"HYGIENE--Use a new invention, soap and water!!! Women produce much more “smegma”, all kinds of discharges, wetness, and smells; because of physiologic and anatomical reasons, and how would you feel if they cut your vulva lips??? Women, why don’t you answer my question, are you afraid? Women are more likely to get urinary tract infections and no one suggests we surgically alter them at birth to reduce the risks! Just one of many double standards and laws that always treat men worse."
I'm not as angry as the person who wrote it seems to be, but I can understand his frustration. I don't have a problem with people having a preference, we've all got the right to have preferences in life. But when you push your preferences on everybody else, and then try to make up things to justify your reasons......that's just straight up wrong.
Once again.....the purpose of a circumcision.....in the U.S.....is about preference.....it's about aesthetics.

There is no GOOD reason for a circumcision and it should be stopped until all little girls are routinely circumcised also

Circumcision has been around for many years and was originally carried out under religious grounds and still is for the Muslim and Jewish community.

It can also be carried out for medical reasons in young boys if they have ballooning of the foreskin making it impossible for them to pass water....In some country's it is also carried out for hygiene purposes....

Usually religious significance, for Jews and Muslims.

In America it's a hygenic thing. The rest of the world finds us bizarre.

it is the faith and religion of Muslims to circumcise the penis when the boy is small. Recently one study showed that circumcised men have less chances of contracting AIDS. because germs from vagina do not remain on the penis in hidden layers...

None, just religious mutilation. 80% of the world population of men are not circumsized, so the bull crap about hygiene is just that.

There are many reasons...culturl, religious, preference, but the most common is for hygenic purposes. An uncircumsised penis is at high risk for infections and is also unsanitary. After urinating, excess urine is trapped under the foreskin and can cause problems. Try reading this link for more information:

For Jews it marks the covenant between God and Abraham. For everybody else it is a cleanliness thing.
