I recently purchased a home and had the air conditioner/heater checked by a HVAC mechanic. He found that a wire was keeping the Air Conditioner compressor from coming on; he connected it. He then checked the heat and said everything was working fine. Well now, a couple months later, it's getting cold, so I've turned on the heat. Only cold air is coming out of the gas furnace. Is there something I should be doing since this is the first time I've turned on the heat? Please help.

If it is a newer furnace.......
Bad igniter
Bad or dirty flame sensor
off on one of the safeties....blocked flue, flame rollout, over temp.

Entirely too many scenarios. If you are not familiar with this equipment, Please call a qualified tech to give the unit a once over.
It is NOT worth jeopardizing you and your families safety over a few measley bucks to have it professionally repaired.

Good luck!

The newer furnaces have a safety that if the unit overheats the fans come on and stay on. You may first check the filter in the furnace. Next look at your thermostat and see if the "fan" is in the "on" or "auto" position. The best setting is the auto.

If you have check all that I have told you, and still having problems, call the repairman.

If you like, you can re post with the repairman work order and we can go over his work.

Is it an old flurnace with a pilot light? If so maybe it is not lit.
Is the thermostat turned to heat and on a high temperature above the room temperature?

Call a repairman if these lead no where. Your thermocouple may need to be cleaned or replaced.

Has the thermostat been switched from cooling to heating mode? Check to see the gas valves 1- the main gas lineis one, and 2 - near the burner is turned to on.

If your fan continues to run the problem may be, (assuming the thermostat is wired properly ) it could very well be you fan limit switch getting stuck. this switch is suppose to let your heaters heat exchanger cool down to a predetermined set point then shut the fan off, some times these get stuck. Or your fan motor may be wired to Hi speed instead of Low speed which is the required speed.
