Ask the Q again in about 10 yrs.
His play, stats, and maybe most importantly, his rings (or lack thereof), will determine his place in NFL history.
Remember, 2 weeks ago Rex Grossman was the next Brett Favre, don't tag ANYONE too quickly.

Well as a lifelong niners fan I wish i could say "Hell Yes" to this question but no. He will never be Montana or Young. I'm just hoping he somewhat continues to improve and becomes a solid qb. He has show improvements this year so far but theres a long way to go. Not to mention he doesnt have a true No.1 WR or a good line, or a dependable RB or a dependable defense that can win games when he's off. But hey, niners fan have at least a bit of a reason for hope. Alex Smith isnt terrible, we have two decent TE's, Frank Gore is a good back when he doesnt fumble and etc.

You should be banned for such a ridiculous question. That would be like asking if Thomas Jones is the next Walter Payton because he has improved in Chicago, or if Shawne Merriman is the next LT because he had a great rookie season and has a propensity for using illegal substances.
Maybe if Alex Smith was actually WINNING games, there might be a reason to think that he was "significantly improving," but until that happens, I should never hear, see, or read another question like this one.

Seriously did Montana start that bad. I don't remember the start of his carrer. Anyway I doubt that Alex Smith is. One thing though he doesn't have a Jerry Rice like WR. Montana was on a great team. Yes he was a great QB but had the great talent with him as well.

I hate it when people try to dub someone the next whoever. There will never be another montana or another jordan for that matter. How bout we just say he is Alex Smith a NFL QB with a huge upside with the right tools around him

Montana no way. Montana is a legend. When Smith wins 1 superbowl then you can start comparing until then he doesnt deserve to wash Montana's car.

Absolutely not. This is a bad question. Alex Smith is nowhere near the top quarterbacks in the league today, nevermind in history.

Nope, don't think so! Unless he can get the right receiving corps and the offensive linemen to protect him consistently in the lineup. Montana was blessed in that regard...
