Has anyone ever gotten socks for Christmas? I mean just socks and that's it? I'm reading In Pursuit of Happyness and he says sometimes that's all he'd get.

I "adopted" a little boy for Christmas last year..he had to write down one item he wanted for Christmas...his card said ....SOCKS!!

I couldnt believe it...8 yrs old...wrote socks! I got him socks alright...tons of them...formal..everyday...sports themed...and then filled them with candy..and fun toys..just like stocking stuffers...

We know some people that have really spoiled rotten kids, you know, the kind that you really don't want to buy for because they expect it & demand it. We make a point of not being around them at Christmas so we don't have to hear their childrens demands. Anyway - when their kids demand that I have to get them "this" gift or "that" gift - I tell them that all I am getting them is socks. And I meant it!!! Like I said, we don't see those people from Thanksgiving till after New Years now!!!

My mom gives my husband new socks every year, but not 'just' socks. That would push a person to the limits of being 'thankful for what they get' and the 'it's not the gift but the thought that counts' thinking.
As for my husband, he counts on them every year. He has this 'thing' about having a drawer full at all times of bleached white socks. It is one of his few, obsessive compulsive things. As for me, I would probably be bummed with the socks, but would try to be grateful.

Maman used to buy my brother and dad socks and underwear, 1 package each, for under the tree. I always thought that sucked. It always seemed so unfair, that all they got was stuff they 'needed'. Kind of like getting a vacuum cleaner... a pleasant gift is something that people enjoy getting, and don't need!

My ex husband once gave me an empty box, with "this is a box full of love" written on the inside...we had only $10 each to buy Christmas gifts for each other; I got him a record he wanted, he got himself a record he wanted, and me an empty box. Guess why he's my ex. Nothing romantic about it - just so dang greedy he couldn't stand missing the OTHER record too - and didn't care enough about me to put me first just once.

Most people in this world don't get more than one gift. That one gift may be socks. Spoiled kids and lucky kids get toys and candy. Poor families get necessary items, such as socks.
