They assume that you aren't allowed one.
The question is usually asked to find out what things someone values, not to find out how practical they are!

I think that is b/c a lot of people only think of there immediate survival and not the long term picture. I personally when asked what would I bring if I was stranded on a desert idalnd or the wilderness say a shovel. I have no survival skills, I woulnt eat anything that I have to kill and I dont' trust the "safe" plants. I would want a shovel so I can dig my grave and by the time I had that done just fall in lol.

What's the use of being on a desert island, away from the stress of the normal world if you've used up one of your 'wishes' on a way to get right back there again? People don't forget the boat, they purposefully don't remember it because they don't want to go back to normal life!

You don`t take a boat to a desert. It would work on a deserted island.

Mmmm...quite a philosophical and good comment. I would take a luxury yacht rather than a wooden row boat though.

Maybe people don't say boat because they like the idea of being on a permanent beach holiday!!

Who would want a boat with the state of the world today and all this politically correct rubbish I'd be happy to stay there and do and say what I liked.

They are only allowed one luxury, and IMHO it would be crazy to want a boat! After all, what is there to go anywhere else for?
I think the best answer I ever heard to that question was, "My 40 gig iPod with all my music on it".

there is a Far Side cartoon from years back, showing the skelton of a shipwrecked sailor on a beach.

Washing up on the beach are three crates; one marked food, one marked boat and one marked outboard motor-with gas!

You have discovered that when these surveys take place that no-one ever asks a sailor, they all must be up the old sea dog or something.

Write to your MP, start a revolution, think of the sailors (and their dogs)

Interesting thought - but you are right - I have never heard anyone say a boat - maybe they don't wish to be found....lol
