Humanoid in appearance or humanoid in intellect?

As spiders are far older than humans in evolution terms its not likely that they will. They have been around for millions of years. How ever if they did develope into humanoids. They would probably keep many of the traits Like shedding their skins as they grow. Hunting their prey when hungry. And as most spiders are solitary so there woulldnt be much of a community spirit. And Dating would be hazardous as the male would put their life on the line, and most probably get eaten during mating.
However on the sports side of things they would been exceptional at running and jumping. If they have shops everything would probably be wrapped in silk and paralyzed. As they are carnivorous. And still suck the their dinner dry as they dont digest food on the inside.

Just a guess though.

Wow this is really a very fun, speculative question. A society basically develops as the individuals interact with the other members of a group who have a common goal. Humans interact with others cooperatively in order to acheive the satisfaction of their needs and wants. We group together to insure that we have food to eat, clothes to wear, shelter to keep us safe, our children are cared for and provided for, etc. etc.

What would they look and think like? An insect presently cannot grow past about a maximum of 6' because they do not have lungs and would need them in order to grow larger than that. So they would have to be either the same size, develop lungs, or live in a more oxygen rich environment (something that would require a global change). They would have to develop more articulate limbs, like hands or learn to use the legs together to accomplish more difficult or complex tasks. Mammals develop feelings and emotions in order to work together or care for the young. They developed this early on. SPiders don't have this need so they would probably develop them later on or they would be an incredibly cold, emotionless, and unfeeling society
So a society is basically a group of individuals who value the same things and work together to acheive the goals of the group and thereby their own individual goals and needs and desires. it is therefore needful to ask, what is it that a highly developed humanoid spider needs, wants and desires. Food unlike for humans, is readily available. A human isn't all that equipped naturally to be able to hunt by itself without a group or at least some form of tools. A spider on the other hand, has all its natural tools and ability to bring down or hunt prey, so the need for food would not be a reason for their society to develop and therefore would not eb a basic tenant of their society's foundation. Likewise shelter matters very little since they are naturally more durable and stronger than people. They may band together to ensure their surivival during winter months however. Insects do not have a very active life when the cold months come about. They either die or burrow into the ground and become dormant. They may band together in some way to try to reach a solution to this problem.

So what is importnat to a spider? I would estimate that the single biggest concern is getting food (something they can do on their own) and laying and caring for eggs. Reproduction is the only thing that a spider needs another spider in order to accomplish. Their society would probably revolve around the act and the industry of reproduction and laying and caring for eggs. They would probably see that there is a great advantage in having another individual watch over and care for the eggs to ensure that there is a higher percentage of the young ones survive.

Other than for the continutaion of the species I don't think that spiders would ever develop into a very highly structuralized society even if they became highly intelligent.

Please ignore Robert's answer below: The females being twice their size would randomly eat males to begin with. Can you see an opportunity for equal rights there? Not a hope. They would try to take over the world with their eight legged freakishness and brute force but alas, having a consistantly poor intellect and most illogical thinking skills, they would run straight into the males specially designed invisible webs from where they would be transported to their homes and debrained (just in case!) and finally plugged into the house computer via a new biocerebrobotical wireless antennae. Since they have 8 legs/hands whatever, they would get all the housework done in no time. It'd be great!
