I think because it makes them feel superior and also puts into perspective that their life isn't so bad after all.

I swear everywhere I go I seem to have 'talk to me' tattooed on my forehead because people just seem to open up to me and talk about problems that I would never tell a stranger, but I listen and try to give advice when warranted or just listen. People seem to really need to talk and sometimes an objective third party is just what they need.
I don't do it for any selfish purpose and I definitely don't solicit it. It just seems like I send out some kind of radar, and it does not make me feel good about myself to hear other's problems, but it does make me feel good if I can make them a little less sad or angry or help in any way.
But, I do know what you are talking about and doing it for a selfish purpose and taking pleasure in other's pain is just wrong and disgusting to me.

One upmanship. It works in the reverse way too. You try to make yourself look better then someone else. You try to feel better then someone else as well. But as long as you're happy with being who you are is it really making you feel better or comparing what you have?

I guess sometimes it puts things into prospective for them. They then realize they could have it much worse, sometimes it helps them appreciate their lives a little more. I don't know if that is the sort of answer you were looking for...............
