I got married to my husband and on his death bed he stated that he wasn't sure if he was divorced from his previous wife. I don't have the funds to pay to find out and it was not where I live.I know her name but dont know when it may have been filed.

If you know the county and state you can go to the register of deeds since divorce records are public, just like birth certificates, marriages, etc.

You can go to the courthouse of the county the divorce was filed in. You can ask to look at the records. It's a good idea to know approximately what month and year it was granted to cut down on the number of records you have to look through. The office staff should be able to show you where to look. If you can't physically go there, you will probably have to pay a fee for someone to do the search for you.

It is possible to look at county records either at the courthouse or on line. Divorce is part of the public record, but you will not be able to see the settlement in most cases.

I guess call the courthouse where it was filed. The Clerk of Court would know...its public knowledge. Granted for free?
Never heard of that one.

It should be a matter of public record at the county courthouse.
