You were likely hearing the noise from the Miramar Air Show, which occurred from Friday to Sunday. I live by Miramar, and it was horribly noisy those three days, with the jets passing overhead. The twilight show occurred between 5:30 and 9 pm Saturday with fireworks - that was probably what you heard.
