My boiler has packed up and we can't afford to replace it right now. We have heating sorted out , its just hot water? How much would it cost to replace the existing over bath shower that was supplied by the hot water tank to an independant over bath electric shower? Any ideas?

the fan on the boiler has gone and we have been reliably informed that the cost of replacing parts and labour would be pretty much equal to replacing the boiler which is way out of our price range for the forseeable months ahead

we were told the fan has gone (we can hear thats gone anyway- makes a horrible noise) but also the hot water pump no longer works- there is a metal arm that comes out of it or something that pushes in when the hot water is supposed to come out that doesn't anymore if that makes sense?

There is no way that the cost of a fan is as much as a replacement boiler, check here for a replacement fan, and then find a good corgi reg. engineer.

Where are you??

An electric shower, eg. Mira Sport 9.6kw would cost about £400.00-£450 supplied and installed which is at least twice the cost of supplying and fitting a flue fan. What is the boiler make and model, and is it def. only a motor failure??

You can get a shower for £70, Cable (depends on length) - try £30, Switches/fittings etc £20. Materials total approx £120. Thats a self done job. Do NOT attempt if not fully competent - you would also need a Part P check.

Obviously you can get it installed, so you'd have to add labour charges onto the materials cost.

Depends how far the power supply is for the length of cable but you are looking at £400 minimum unless there is a cable there from the previous owner. Cant you get the boiler repaired

Agree with Wattsie but you will also need a mains pressure water supply to the shower as your old one will probably be gravity fed from the hot water cylinder - so you have to add that cost in as well, both parts and labour.

"On Demand" hot water units run about $300 + install. (Gas or electric). Although, if you are adventerous, I did build a portable water heater. Using the condenser coil from a small window air conditioner as a heat absorber, I set that on top of a round kersone heater, and ran water thru. Not much water flow, but it worked, and it was cheap.

Try your insurance company, I heard of a guy who got a new boiler, only cost him £50 ( The excess)
Failing that do you not have an immersion heater. in the meantime..

IF your fan is out, just replace it. You are being scammed if they say replacing the fan would be equivalent ot replacing the entire boiler. get a second opinion.

Depending on the size of your old one and therefore the size of your MCB in the consumer unit you may have to consider upgrading that as well. Your electrician will be able to tell you that. As for the cost, the only way to find out is to get some quotes from reputable electricians or plumbers.

sorry I have no clue what your saying... from what I see you need an electric HOT water heater... which can go for less than $200 but need it piped and wired and installed...which could run you a few hundred more.

your best bet is to have a 40 gallon water heater installed between 500.00 and 600.00 dollars
