En la mayoria de los otros paises, la gente hablan dos o tres lenguas.

Solamente en los estado unidos, la gente solamente quieren hablar una lengua.

No es tan dificil aprender.

The hispanic population is booming. I mean they are closing in as the next largest race in our country. No it's not just Paterson,NJ but everywhere. Mostly where hispanic population is largest. I have found that 80% of jobs in New Jersey and New York prefer or require you be able to speak spanish. It doesn't discriminate against African Americans only but people who are unable to speak spanish. My whole thing is, this is The United States of America. No offense to my brown brother's but learn to speak english like other people who speak a second language. We cater to the hispanic culture exclusively too much. I mean to the point where any number you call for assistance or help they ask you first if you want to continue in english. What the hell is that about? Other cultures are forced to learn english they don't have a choice in the matter living in the U.S. Why are we playing favorites to those who speak spanish? I understand where you are coming from.

Absolutely not. Coming to America means following AMERICAN norms- meaning speak ENGLISH in America. Those that are immigrating to America are doing so because they like what America has to 'offer' right? But yet it seems that they are all coming here trying to change what we have to 'offer'. We offer the English language, if they want to speak Spanish then maybe America isn't the best country for them to live in. There are several other countries that speak Spanish- I'm sure they would make a lovely place to live also! There is no such thing as learning "at least a little bit" of Spanish for healthcare providers. I'm a nurse and I know first hand that knowing "a little bit" of Spanish is unacceptable. There have be incidents with physicians and other healthcare providers that know "a little bit of Spanish" have been sued because that "little bit of Spanish" wasn't enough and errors occurred. You all are thinking get a translator, right? Getting a translator in an emergency room that is overcrowded with illegals seeking non-emergent medical care is not as easy as we would like. But that's another question, another time. Speak ENGLISH in AMERICA!

I understand what you're saying. I am a customer service professional with several years experience supervising in a call center and since I moved to a new city, I have had the hardest time finding an ENTRY level customer service job because I don't speak Spanish. I personally believe it's because English isn't the "official" language here in the US. However, it should be. This being election season, perhaps that should be an issue that politicians and voters need to consider. Make English the official language and make learning English a requirement for citizenship.

I think the same thing, America has always been an English speaking country, For society to function well, there has to be a language that everyone can speak, If you want to live here...learn the language, it is crazy that the ones that were born and raised here for generations should have to learn another language.

Someone else said English is the UNofficial language of the United States, It should be the OFFICIAL language, and it should be required that everyone be able to speak it.

Cause their are alot of spanish people in america. So alot of people you work with will speak it and clients, customers whatever will be alot of spanish people. African americans are great people, but i dont think that them having to speak spanish is discriminating against them. Everyone tries to learn it as second language. I know a chinese couple who speaks it.

I think it's sad we a part of an ENGLISH speaking country can be EXPECTED to know Spanish by certain individuals.

I was working at a certain place and they told me to learn Spanish so I could understand the other employee's who were NOT LEGAL when speaking to me. I told the people I worked for I was not livining in Mexico and refused to accommodate those living here illegally. Asking this of me and anyone else who is a citizen is so very wrong.

We have the same problem with French in Canada. As the Official second language, you may need to know it to be a good communicator. It's a one way street as the French population won't recognize English but we, as English speaking people, must recognize French as an official language in Canada.

America is a melting pot of different cultures and ethnic backgrounds, it's just the way it is. Americans resent their heritage being overwritten by this new wave, but as long as America is the "Land of the Free" you're going to encounter this. What is so wrong with learning a new language? Nothing Nada Zilch!

You have to remember that in this country we have a large amount of people for everywhere. They use the requirement of Spanish more as a skill/tool for their company, because you might encounter clients that communicate with that language. It is not discrimination, if you lived in Puerto Rico, in many jobs they will require English as skill.

Because ignorance is not part of the North American worker's skillset.

Everyone who lives in North America had better learn some Spanish. It's part of the present and a bigger part of the future. Those who take pride in their monolingualism and complain will have to stand aside from the rest of us who embrace our multicultural society and will be taking the best jobs.

Either educate yourself or get out of the way. There is no time for nationalism.
