Yes as its a part of her job , but she has to have a valid reason for doing it also anything she reads is confidential
there is a code of honour she has to sign , its the same if she overhears anything a patient says to the DR she must not repeat it .

NO! she can have absolutely No access to your records whatsoever! she can handle the file, but not actually read it at all! In doing so, she has breached the Data Protection \act, and your Doctor's Surgery or clinic could actually be sued for allowing your personal information to be read by someone who is NOT medically trained in any way! Seriously, you should take action: go the appropriate authorities, and get solicitors involved and see what happens. Serious law breaking going on if the receptionist is reading your files! What makes it even worse is, she wants to question you about your personal problems and medication/drugs you're being prescribed. She has absolutely no right to ask such questions. She can't change what a Doctor has prescribed you, and has no power or authority to find out such information! I hope you told her where to go when she asked!

Yes she can read your records...there is a thing called privacy and i'm sure you have signed the privacy notice at your physican's office. Your medical record is for the use of the entire office staff, unless stipulated by you. The privacy law prohibits the office staff from sharing or discussing your records with others whom are not employed there or other physicians(you must sign a release form for your records to be released to anyone else)but from experience yes she is allowed to read your records! If she were to discuss your condition or diagnosis with anyone without your permission then the doctor could be sued.

If she is just a receptionist, probably not. If she is like the doc's assistant then maybe. I work for an optometrist and I will glance at a hot patients record to see how old he is ;) but that's about it. Maybe tell your doc you are uncomfortable with your info not be completely confidential. Good chance he may talk about it anyway so she wouldnt even have to read the chart. Sorry :(

Yes they can. It's very annoying but there is no way of avoiding it. However, they should never enter into dialogue with you about it, this is without doubt in breach of their trust position. Also they are not doctors and have no right whatever to question you about drugs you are on or anything else to do with your medical treatment. I'm not being nasty but if you feel that they have overreached their position, I would mention it to the GP. They are not allowed to do that.

It all depends on her role in the office. If she really is a nurse or an MA she has that right. I work in an office where I do it all from front office to back. So you might check it out with the doctor. But the office should comply with whatever you feel most comfortable with so keep that in mind. Do what makes you feel good per say, ultimately they are there to work with you.

Are you sure she's not a nurse?

If she's not, then complain to the doctor. Just because she works the desk and answered the phone doesn't automatically make her a receptionist. Find out first.

I would imagine they are able to read them but what qualifications does she have to query what medication you are on as this was obviously prescribed by your Doctor. I would make a point of mentioning it when next you see him.

She may have some knowledge of medicine but she should not be asking those questions. A nurse or doctor should ask those questions if they needed to be asked for some reason.
