I have three in a small tank and all three randomly go to the surface of the bowl and breathe the air. I won them at the fair, so I honestly expected them to die before now, but I'm hoping they aren't trying to commit suicide...

This once happened to me. Why your fish are breathing air is because there is no oxygen in the water and./or the tank is too small. You should often change your tank once a day. Or a better idea, get your fish a pump, or anything the produces air (bubbles) in the water. There is not enough oxygen for your fish, and they go to the surface. And no, they are not trying to commit suicide. A good idea is to change the bowl once a day and do not fill it to the top. Fill it at 2/3 full. Another thing you can do is get a air pump for your fish, or little tablets that produce bubbles and give oxygen in the water. But I think the best idea is to get a pump. If you get a pump, it is a machine that produces air in the tank. You put a small hose in the tank and it gives air to the fish, so they won't surface for air anymore. But I what reccomend first to to change the water once a day and fill it at 2/3 full or less.
Good Luck! I hope I helped! :-)

The small tank is too small for those fish. Goldfish need a minimum of 10 gallons each to have a chance at living a healthy life. I won 3 fish from a fair a little over 2 years ago and not only do I still have them but I have some of their babies as well. The main reason fair fish die so fast is because most people come home and shove them in something too small and without a filter. Your fish sound like they need more oxygen. Air stones don't work like most would think, they don't add air to the water, when the bubbles pop at the surface it allows the gases to escape and lets the oxygen come in. A good filter would be great at that.
If you would like them to live then get them a bigger tank and a filter that pumps the water at least 10x an hour. So if you got them a 30 gallon tank the filter would have to pump 300gph, more is also better though.
If you don't want them or don't want to care for them then try to find someone with a pond that will take them.

your fish are needing the extra air because there is a shortage of air in the water tank. Goldfish are "dirty fish" and the tank needs to be cleaned more often. Make sure your air supply and filters are working properly. If there just in a bowl, change out the water whenever they start to surface for air,and hope they last.

Ok I recently had a goldfish that was given to me and it was about 2 yrs. old. But after i got it and had it in my tank it slowly started to act differnet actually ended up dying. It was also breathing the air and the pet shop said because the tank ( 5 gallon) was to small for it and it didnt have enough oxygen. Also goldfish are real dirty fish so its important to maintain there water very regularly. Try moving them to a bigger tank with a bigger filter for more oxygen. Good luck!! Hope you dont have the experiance I had.

They arent.... this means there is not enough oxygen in the water for them to breathe all the time, try changing their water, or get them a bigger place to live. In a fish bowl, 3 fish is alot to be sharing the same air, either get them one of the bubble things , a bigger tank, or change the water daily.

They are not breathing the air. They go to the surface and expell bubbles. Congrats on keeping them alive. Get them an air tank to convert oxygen into the water. Good luck.

You are a horrible person. How about donating the fish to someone who will actually care for them properly instead of waiting for them to die?! Or, if you want other fish that will actually work well with your tank, why not ask your local pet store if you can exchange them for store credit - and then care for the fish you get with that credit properly?
You fish have no control over their lives at this point in time - it is up to you to make sure they live long healthy lives. If you can't do that, then fine - give them to someone who can provide for them.
