I'm looking for something that might mean a lot to him from a daughter. He's not a materialist & he doesnt have any hobbies. So I'm lost on what to get him. He does enjoy his walks, his newspapers & some music though.

Go get your picture taken at a professional photographer and frame it in a nice frame.....then present it to him with a dinner gift certificate where you both can go together.

The best give you can give will come from your heart and will live for him every day.

My suggestion if he does not already have one and you have the time to put one together is a scrapbook/photo book with as much of the stuff he has told you about in his stories his whole life. Let him know you remember by making it real and presentable to him.

My dad is 79 this year and very healthy, and "God willing" and it stays that way, my siblings and I are looking to do something like this for his 80th birthday.

can you organise a day out somewhere different that he might really like ... something out of the ordinary?

one idea: this is a bit sombre, but many people visit the Somme in France - it's easy to get to & very moving & there are some nice guest houses ... not for everyone but just an idea ...

or, maybe he could start a new hobby, if you found something he was enthusiastic about ...

it sounds like he is a bit "shut down" and just marking time ... maybe you need to get to know him, talk about what he used to do and see if you can awaken some of his old "fire"!

good luck!

My dad is the same.
For his 70th, I got hold of some of his relatives, got hold of some old photos and did a This Is Your Life type presentation. He still reads it from time to time.
It is simple yet something that means a great deal to him because of the effort that went into making it. He was really quite touched.
Give it a go if you have the time. I think he will appreciate it more than a box of chocs or something.

This is a shot in the dark, but if you're near London and he's a Monty Python fan take hime to see Spamalot in Shaftesbury Avenue. It's meant to be hilarious and you can have a nice meal somewhere before or after.

Go to the libary and priint of what was in the news when he was born, Get a nice photo of the 2 of you when you were younger and put it in a nice silver frame, get him a good walking guide, of other countries, if he likes walking he'd be interested. Take him for a walk down to the nearest pub/resturaunt and take him for a slap up dinner, and flowers i always think its nice when men receive flowers.

get a newspaper that was printed on his b'day - easy enough look up on internet. if the weather wasnt turning a bit nasty a picnic would have been nice - combined walk etc. otherwise just spend the day with him and have other close family members over for a meal at his place? if he's simple like my da' he wont wnat to be doing with restaurants or going out or being fussed over. if your his only kiddie then get a pic of him holding u as a little one and you can have that printed on to icing to go onto a cake? or just get one of him in his heyday looking really dapper adn have that printed on to icing sheet - can get it done on e-bay.

have a fun day with him!

Hey had another thought - why not start a project with him - write his autobiography with him - get a tape recorder and interview him about his childhood, his memories of growing up, school, work, meeting your mum, marraige, the birth of his kids etc. etc you dont have to do it in a day - make this an ongoing project something you put time aside for maybe once a month? if youre slow at typin (and trust me transcribing takes ages! you can get people to do it for you -email me i know folk) and then u can build up his own life story in his words and then you have the perfect present for next year or for next fathers day. you can add in family pics. it'll be lovely cos u spend loads of time with him and u find out more about him and he gets to reminisce and tell his story. plus its written down for future generations - your kids and grandkids can enjoy!

Make a calendar for 2007, if you have a scanner & a photo shop program, it can be done easily & quickly, using different photos of your pets, friends & family with favorite sayings & such, have fun with it. This would be a memorable gift.

Get him some concert tickets to see his favourite singer. Nothing too wild though! I wouldn't advise Trivium for a 70 year old.
