Most standard wall outlets are rated for 15 amps or approximately 1650 watts. So just subtract the amperage or wattage for each device from 1650 until you reach 0. Keep in mind most outlets share a breaker with several other outlets. Usually these breakers are 20 amp breakers or 2200 watts. So you must take into account the other devices on the circuit to keep from blowing the breaker.

One. To plug in more than one you would need more than one outlet. Assuming you are speaking of the standard two outlet wall plug you could plug two but it would not be a good idea. I have two but they are plugged into separate wall outlets and have separate surge protectors. Maybe I am being over-cautious but better safe than sorry.

Rather, it is how many plugs and what load you want to put on a single outlet. I don't suggest putting more than one surge protector.
If you have things with a high load like computers, don't share them on just one surge protector / outlet.

what sort of outlet?
if a telephone - just 1 unless u use a splitter that can cause problems
if a telephone line for adsl -> multi if its connected into router.
if a plug socket --> i wouldnt advise any more than 4 if use a mutli socket.
