I would suggest using a product called Zone Alarm to start with which is a free firewall. When someone is trying to access your computer, it will inform. That will not protect you from viruses per-sa but is a must. They have a free version (not a demo) and a more ellaborate version which will cost but not necessary. As far as anti-virus, Mcafee has a product called STINGER which analyzes your computer for known viruses and removes them. Does not prevent but is a start to make sure you are not infected. Go to http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/polipstinger.asp and download it and run. The instructions are all there... Other than that, go to google and type "free anti-virus" and see what comes up. Be sure to run STINGER before and aafter you install.

Yes, AVG is a common free anti-virus program. Don't forget to add anti-spyware, anti-adware, and anti-malware software onto your computer as well.

I like Ad-Aware, PestPatrol, and Spyware Doctor.

AVG from grisoft is pretty good, and very stable, reliable. You can update if automatically from the net, and it doesnt' cost anything.

Also, housecall-antivirus is a good online scanner.
