Because beyond all the crap, there is information on everything imaginable (for better or for worse). Not only is it essential to effeciently do homework etc, it is also the primary means of communication and entertainment with friends.
As long as you watch what your kids are doing, or teach them to know what to avoid it should be okay. Just like you'd have to teach them to not just talk to any stranger on the street, they need to learn how to avoid predators on the net.
Keeping a kid off the net until they are 17 just isnt realistic in this day and age. It would hinder them in school compared to other kids who have the information at their fingertips. Libraries just aren't as up to date, and the information takes longer to find.
But you do need to keep a close eye on what they are doing. Just like you would when they play outside.
Yeah, they will try to be sneaky and check out stuff they shouldnt, but then I used to look at my dads playboys when I was little too.

I wonder why most people are on the internet.
Like all new technologies the kids will understand it better than most of the adults.
It's like TV. Or rock and roll music.
I tell ya, society never changes, no matter what they learned as a kid, people still grow up to be fuddie-duddies, always thinking the new fangled stuff is bad for the kids, even though they were into new fangled stuff when they were kids and they certainly don't think they were hurt by it.
then again, most people don't think things through, they just make snap decisions on knee-jerk reactions, because it's easier and takes less brain energy.

Sites like neopets.com generally cater to kids. Also online chatting is very popular. It is the parent's responsibility to monitor what the child does. But to deny complete usage would be bad... that would harm developing the necessary skills to use the internet in the real world: communications, development, and research. The Internet is a great resource if people use it.

Because they can talk to therebuddies on it away form school but i agree with you the internet is not safe so if your gonaa let him go on just make sure its in the living rom or some open spot were you can openly view what there doing and occastionally check on em...Because my parents let me go on the internet when I was young and i got in alot of trouble on it,its just not safe!
So i would let him use it because he is gonna need to be able to use it in school and in the world at an early age so let him go on but make sure you know what ez doing!

i dont have anything against kids being on the net, but then again im 16 lol. but unless the kid is wasting time with pointless net chatting, net gaming or porno sites, in that case u're right that kids shouldnt be allowed net. otherwise, no harm done.

Children are most likely able to be on the computer, because if they have homework to do. Otherwise if they are not doing homework then I would not let them on, or if you do watch them very carefully.

There is no harm in children being on the net, as long as they are supervised.
