On the contrary! The random orbital sander leaves less "fish scales" and sand evenly. The square kind suck if you ask me. They always leave marks due to the pattern not being random. Ask any good woodworker and he/she will tell the same.

the square ones moves up down left and right randomly so they sand more evenly. the oribitals spin around so its harder to control and get smooth sanding.

you must always sand with the grain! squares, so long as you hold them proplerly, will do that. orbitals however, spend half thier time with the grain and half thier time against it.
